Tomato Harvest!

Despite some seriously pathetic looking wilted plants, I managed a fairly good first tomato harvest today! The Green Grape tomatoes managed a great summery tomato flavor despite the lack of sun and heat this summer while the rest are eh... bland. No matter, they'll make great sauce for canning which was my main drive for planting all those tomatoes in the first place.
I have yet to harvest any of the San Marzano paste tomatoes as they are still ripening (and seem to be a bit resistent to the wilt virus). I'm so very glad I didn't pull out all the plants as was my first impulse when I saw them wilting. There are many more out there to harvest still. Once I get these canned I'll hit the plants up again. Very happy!

Worth the wait, despite the wilt!

Wow! This is your 1st harvest? For being so close we are worlds apart. I'm contemplating pulling my plants out now to make room for fall planting; but my tomatoes keep giving. Tough choice.

We're getting close to ripping out as well, but we're quite a ways away! ;-)

Beautiful tomato harvest! First harvest are usually small, I wonder how big will be the next one...
What variety are those big red ones?

Envy envy ENVY!! I think I'll end up with completely green tomatoes this year- not enough heat & sun for any but the cherries to ripen (we've had a LOT of those but they go directly to the kids). I'm holding on to your chutney recipe since I'll probably need it!!

Shauna - I hope you get some red tomatoes! If the frost threatens to hit before they ripen you can always pull some off and keep them in a dark place (not the windowsill as most people do!).

vrtlarica - those biggies are Jersey Giants.

Maybelline - I think had we not had so much fog and clouds this summer we'd be closer in our harvests, yet we never get the heat of your area!

I'm really looking forward to pulling out my terribly unattractive tomato plants and getting something else in the ground! I want to do a HUGE planting of peas this year.
