CUCUMBERS!

Sorry to yell that out, but my goodness I was so surprised to see some cucumbers that I let out a squeal when I saw them. This is the back side of the tomato garden. I planted cucumbers and two chayotes (which I blogged about here) and some hot peppers along the fence. The deer have eaten most of the hot peppers (the more I type that out the hungrier I get for venison).
Here is the chayote so far. Not seeing 30' vines just yet...
Look at these cucumbers! They grew so quickly I never even noticed them as babies.

So you know what I did immediately after taking these photos, don't you? I picked them and ran (really, I ran!) into the kitchen to taste them. I cut blossom end off first and started slicing. Fabulous! A teeny taste of bitter in the skin which I find tasty. Look how juicy and perfect they are. Oh my. Still swooning.
And, of course, you may guess what I did next. Oh ya, PICKLES!! (did I just shout that? sorry!)
Happy!

JEALOUS!

I have one cucumber growing! Well, there are a few teeny tiny babies too, but that I'm sure I'll get to pick and eat. One.

I'm jealous too! It's hard not to get excited for cucumbers after waiting so long. I am so very much looking forward to our first ones...soon I hope.

I just looked at your garden pictures from the previous post and your gardens look amazing, just look at those tomatoes...wow, now I'm even more jealous.:) Nice sunflowers, I can't believe how thick the stalks are. We sometimes use the dried stalks for next year's pea trellises.

I just ate that one cucumber! With just a little sea salt! It may be a long while before I get another from my garden.

Mr. H, love the stalk as pea trellis idea!

Christine - thank you! I'm very stoked!

Marlyn you have an amazing garden for being gone during the "proper" planting season (which in this crazy summer that means nothing!)

Mr. H you alway honor me so much when you visit. Thank you! Pea trellises sound great for the skinny ones but those fatties are destined for DEER FENCE EXTENTIONS! Our garden fence is a bit over 6' as is, but we've taken to weaving any tall falldown we have be it tree branches, old wood, bamboo, whatever! I'll take whatever!!! to make those deer not be able to come eat my garden. It breaks my heart.

Nice looking cucumber slices soon to be pickle slices :)= What do you use to make your pickles? Do you brine them in a crock or do you can them with a vinegar-spice mixture? I tried to brine mine for two weeks once in a ceramic crock and did not have any success.
